Did you know our brains learn through repetition? In fact, this is how we learnt to first walk, then run. This learning forms a circuit in our unconscious mind and when that circuit is used frequently through practice, our behaviour becomes automatic. Some circuits can be very helpful, such as learning to absorb information quickly, enjoy school and be confident. But some of these circuits can actually work against us. For example, you may have a circuit which makes you feel shy or anxious. You could have a circuit that says you can’t do something important like mathematics, writing an essay or revision.

The effects of stress

We now know that the many pressures you face in your teenage years can lead to issues with mental health. When stress hormones are activated over a sustained period of time, they can very powerfully and negatively distort your thinking, feelings, motivation and ability to stay focused. This means that, even though you may have studied very hard for your exams, you may not perform as well as you could, because of nerves and anxiety. Just like eating well and exercising can prevent you from getting ill, learning to control stress in times of pressure, can prevent mental health problems developing.

Change your thinking, change your state of mind

It can be difficult for teenagers like you, to know whether changes in your behaviour are natural reactions to the growth hormones your body is emitting, or symptoms of some deeper mental health troubles. To help you work out what is happening consider the following. If your behaviour has been different for a long period of time, and if your family and friends are noticing a big change, it maybe that you could be suffering from stress. 

 

Dramatic, long-lasting changes in personality, mood or behaviour should be taken seriously. Speak to the people around you who are there to support you. It’s important to let them know how you are feeling, so that you can get some help. Stress and anxiety can have a major effect of the quality of your learning. 

 

Symptoms of depression

  • Sadness or hopelessness
  • Irritability, anger or hostility
  • Tearfulness or frequent crying
  • Withdrawal from friends and family
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Changes in eating and sleeping habits
  • Restlessness and agitation
  • Feelings of worthlessness and guilt

  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
